There are 13 official Disney Princesses. In film order, they are Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Moana and Raya. That is the lineup on Disney's own princess site and in the Disney+ guide revised on 11 September 2026. Elsa, Anna, Sofia and Elena are Disney heroines but are not on it.
This page sticks to the lineup Disney itself publishes. Each film's year and studio, and each heroine's royal status, come from Wikipedia's film and character articles. The princesses are listed in the order their films were released.
Checked on 13 October 2026 on princess.disney.com and in the Disney+ article "Disney Princess Movies" (revised 11 September 2026). Both show the same 13 heroines.
The 13 Disney Princesses, in film order

| 2 | Cinderella | Cinderella | 1950 | Walt Disney Productions | No. She marries the prince |
| 3 | Aurora | Sleeping Beauty | 1959 | Walt Disney Productions | Yes, daughter of King Stefan |
| 4 | Ariel | The Little Mermaid | 1989 | Walt Disney Feature Animation | Yes, daughter of King Triton |
| 5 | Belle | Beauty and the Beast | 1991 | Walt Disney Feature Animation | No. The film ends with her and the prince; no wedding is shown |
| 6 | Jasmine | Aladdin | 1992 | Walt Disney Feature Animation | Yes, the Sultan's daughter |
| 7 | Pocahontas | Pocahontas | 1995 | Walt Disney Feature Animation | No. Daughter of Chief Powhatan |
| 8 | Mulan | Mulan | 1998 | Walt Disney Feature Animation | No, neither by birth nor by marriage |
| 9 | Tiana | The Princess and the Frog | 2009 | Walt Disney Animation Studios | No. She marries Prince Naveen |
| 10 | Rapunzel | Tangled | 2010 | Walt Disney Animation Studios | Yes, the king and queen's lost daughter |
| 11 | Merida | Brave | 2012 | Pixar Animation Studios | Yes, daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor |
| 12 | Moana | Moana | 2016 | Walt Disney Animation Studios | No. A chief's daughter and heir to Motunui |
| 13 | Raya | Raya and the Last Dragon | 2021 | Walt Disney Animation Studios | No. Daughter of Chief Benja of Heart |
Snow White premiered in Los Angeles on 21 December 1937 and went on general US release in February 1938. Walt Disney Productions and Walt Disney Feature Animation are earlier names of today's Walt Disney Animation Studios, so 12 of the 13 films come from one studio. The exception is Brave, made by Pixar; the Disney+ guide files it in its Pixar collection.
Each heroine's age, and where the number comes from, is on our Disney Princess ages page. MPA ratings, running times and scary scenes for all 13 films are in Disney Princess movies in order for kids.
Who is royal, and who isn't
Six of the 13 are princesses by birth: Snow White, Aurora, Ariel, Jasmine, Rapunzel and Merida. Cinderella and Tiana marry princes on screen. Belle's story ends with the Beast turned back into a prince, but the 1991 film stops before any wedding.
Three heroines are chiefs' daughters rather than kings' daughters. Disney's Pocahontas page calls her a leader of the Powhatan tribe, whose chief is her father. Moana is heir to the chiefdom of Motunui, and Raya is the daughter of Chief Benja of Heart, one of the five lands of Kumandra. Raya's producer, Osnat Shurer, told Entertainment Tonight in 2021 that the filmmakers kept Raya a princess because she is the chief's daughter and was raised to lead.
Mulan has no royal title at all. She is in the lineup for what she does in her film: she takes her father's place in the army and saves China.
What makes a princess official
Disney does not publish formal rules for the franchise, but Wikipedia's summary is a fair guide. The heroine leads a theatrical animated film from a Disney-owned studio, and that film is the first in its series. She is human in her usual form and usually royal: by birth, by marriage or as a chief's daughter.
Heroines who do something exceptionally heroic can also qualify, which is how Mulan fits. Sales matter too.
Who isn't on the list, and why
- Elsa and Anna (Frozen, 2013). Frozen is sold as its own franchise. The sisters appeared in parts of the Ultimate Princess Celebration, which Disney launched on 27 April 2021, and were removed from that collection at the end of August 2022. The full answer is in Is Elsa a Disney Princess?
- Sofia and Elena. They come from Disney TV series, Sofia the First and Elena of Avalor, while the lineup draws on theatrical films. Details are in Are Sofia and Elena Disney Princesses?
- Tinker Bell and Esmeralda. Both were in the original lineup formalized in 2000 and were removed in 2005. Tinker Bell moved to her own franchise, Disney Fairies.
- Megara from Hercules (1997). Fans often ask about her, but she is not on Disney's list, and Wikipedia's history of the franchise does not name her among past members.
- Jane Porter (Tarzan) and Giselle (Enchanted). Disney considered both at different points, but neither officially joined.
When each princess was added
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2000 | Disney formalized the first lineup: Snow White, Cinderella, Tinker Bell, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Esmeralda and Mulan |
| 2005 | Tinker Bell and Esmeralda were removed |
| 14 March 2010 | Tiana was crowned the ninth Disney Princess at the New York Palace hotel in Manhattan |
| 2 October 2011 | Rapunzel was crowned the tenth at Kensington Palace in London |
| 11 May 2013 | Merida was crowned the eleventh at Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World; Queen Elinor placed the crown |
| 2019 | Moana became the twelfth without a ceremony; she simply began appearing in Disney Princess merchandise |
| August 2022 | Disney announced Raya's official debut as a Disney Princess for World Princess Week, 21–27 August 2022, with no coronation; Wikipedia dates her addition to the princess website to August 2023 |
Tiana, Rapunzel and Merida had public coronations. Moana and Raya joined quietly, which is one reason older articles still list 11 or 12 princesses.
Where to check the list yourself
Disney's princess site shows the 13 heroines as pictures and names, with very little text. The Disney+ guide is easier to quote: it lists the films in order and answers "How many Disney Princesses are there?" with 13. Both are linked in the sources below. If a list you find includes Elsa, Sofia or 14 names, it is mixing the franchise with Disney heroines in general.
Several of these heroines have counterparts in Russian fairy tales. Snow White's story, for one, shares its tale type with Pushkin's "Tale of the Dead Princess." We match up the pairs in Disney Princesses and Their Russian Fairy-Tale Counterparts.
FAQ
How many official Disney Princesses are there?
There are 13. Disney's princess site and the Disney+ guide revised on 11 September 2026 both list Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Moana and Raya. Articles that say 11 or 12 were written before Moana joined in 2019 or Raya in 2022.
Who is the newest Disney Princess?
Raya from Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) is the newest. Disney announced her official debut as a Disney Princess for World Princess Week in August 2022, without a coronation ceremony. As of 13 October 2026, no 14th princess appears on Disney's princess site or in the Disney+ guide.
Who was the first Disney Princess?
Snow White comes first in film order. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs premiered on 21 December 1937 as Disney's first feature-length animated film. The franchise itself came much later: Disney formalized the Disney Princess lineup in 2000, and Snow White has been part of it from the start.
Which Disney Princesses are not royal by birth?
Seven of the 13. Cinderella and Tiana marry princes, and Belle's film ends with her beside a prince. Pocahontas, Moana and Raya are chiefs' daughters, which the franchise treats as royal. Mulan has no royal title by birth or by marriage; she is included for her courage in saving China.
Is Merida a Disney or a Pixar princess?
Both, in a way. Brave (2012) was made by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Disney, and the Disney+ guide files it under Pixar. Merida joined the Disney Princess lineup on 11 May 2013 at Magic Kingdom, becoming its first Pixar heroine. As of October 2026, she is still the only one.
Which princesses were removed from the Disney Princess lineup?
Two. Tinker Bell and Esmeralda were both in the first lineup, which Disney formalized in 2000, and both were removed in 2005; Tinker Bell moved to her own franchise, Disney Fairies. Megara from Hercules (1997), often named in fan lists, was never a member. Elsa and Anna were dropped in 2022 from a temporary celebration, not from the lineup itself.
