Pocahontas

Nature, the river and understanding each other

Pocahontas (1995), Walt Disney Feature Animation

Who is Pocahontas?

Pocahontas is the heroine of Disney's animated film of the same name. In the film, she feels close to nature and tries to help people hear each other. She is a fictional character inspired by a real person, not an accurate biography.

How old is Pocahontas? In Disney's Pocahontas (1995), she is about 18 or 19.

This page describes the Pocahontas of Disney's film. This fictional character shouldn't be treated as an accurate biography of the real Pocahontas or as an account of her people's history. For creative play, you can borrow themes that are in the film: watching nature closely and conversations between people who see things differently.

About the story: Disney Princess: Pocahontas.

Draw a path through a fairy-tale forest

Our own activity ideas inspired by the story — for drawing, toys and telling stories aloud.

  1. Plan a route through an imaginary forest. Draw a resting spot, a stream crossing and a bird's home. How can you lay out the path so it doesn't disturb anyone?
  2. Let two toys see the same object differently: to one, a stick is a bridge; to the other, it's part of a house. Make up a conversation that helps them agree.

Talk about it together: How can you build a path through the forest and still keep the animals' homes safe? Whose wishes need to count?

Let’s play!

Ways to keep exploring nature

For open-ended scenes with forest animals, look at My Little Princess: Fairy. You can invent the task yourselves: the guests look for a picnic spot and try not to disturb the forest's residents. Paper and toy animals work just as well for the same story.

We picked these apps for the activity. We haven't confirmed that this heroine appears in them.

Questions about the heroine

Is Disney's Pocahontas a true story?

Not really. The film is a fictional story with invented events. Keep its heroine separate from the real Pocahontas, and turn to other sources for the history.

How old is Pocahontas?

In Disney's Pocahontas (1995), she is about 18 or 19. That age comes from the filmmakers rather than the film: her supervising animator, Glen Keane, gave it to the Orlando Sentinel in 1995. The real Pocahontas was much younger when English colonists arrived in 1607; historians put her at 10 to 12.
