Only three Disney Princess ages are given in the films themselves: Aurora and Ariel are 16, and Rapunzel turns 18. The filmmakers named others: Snow White, 14 (in a 1934 studio document); Moana, 16; Raya, 18; Pocahontas, about 18 or 19; and Belle, early 20s. Frozen's script makes Elsa 21 and Anna 18.
Online lists of princess ages disagree, and few of them say where a number comes from. We traced each age back as far as we could on 13 October 2026 and labeled it by the kind of source behind it. Where we found nothing reliable, the table says "not stated."
How we labeled each age
- Stated in the film: a line of dialogue or a plot point in the film gives the number.
- Stated by filmmakers: a director, producer or supervising animator gave the age in an interview, or Disney put it in writing in a script, a studio working document or publicity text.
- Official tie-in book: a Disney-licensed book gives the age, but we did not find it in the film.
- Commonly cited, unconfirmed: the number is repeated across websites, but we found no primary source for it.
The 13 official Disney Princesses
| Princess | Age | Source type | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snow White | 14 (not said in the film) | Stated by filmmakers | The film doesn't give her age; a 1934 studio working document, quoted by historian Jim Korkis, describes her as 14. It is the outline of 22 October 1934 ("Janet Gaynor type – 14 years old"), which Christopher Finch also quotes in The Art of Walt Disney |
| Cinderella | Not stated (19 is often cited) | Commonly cited, unconfirmed | No primary source found |
| Aurora | 16 | Stated in film | Maleficent's curse is set for sunset on her sixteenth birthday, and the main story takes place on that day |
| Ariel | 16 | Stated in film | Ariel tells her father she is sixteen and not a child anymore |
| Belle | Early 20s | Stated by filmmakers | Supervising animator Mark Henn, at a 2016 anniversary screening reported by USA Today. The often-repeated 17 has no source we could find |
| Jasmine | Not stated (15 is often cited) | Commonly cited, unconfirmed | The Sultan says she must marry a prince by her next birthday, three days away. The film gives no number |
| Pocahontas | About 18 or 19 | Stated by filmmakers | Supervising animator Glen Keane, quoted by the Orlando Sentinel in 1995 |
| Mulan | Not stated (16 is often cited) | Commonly cited, unconfirmed | No primary source found |
| Tiana | Not stated (19 is often cited) | Commonly cited, unconfirmed | No primary source found |
| Rapunzel | 18 | Stated in film | She tells Mother Gothel she is turning eighteen; her birthday sets the plot in motion |
| Merida | 16 | Official tie-in book | Brave junior novelization (Random House, 2012), as cited by Wikipedia |
| Moana | 16 | Stated by filmmakers | Co-director John Musker in 2016, and Disney's 2016 publicity text for the film |
| Raya | 18 | Stated by filmmakers | Producer Osnat Shurer, in a 2021 VFX Voice interview |
Of the 13, three ages are given in the films, five come from the filmmakers or Disney's own materials, one comes from a tie-in book, and four rest on repetition alone.
Elsa, Anna and other Disney heroines
| Heroine | Age | Source type | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elsa, Frozen (2013) | 21 at her coronation | Stated by filmmakers | Jennifer Lee's final shooting script, published by Walt Disney Animation Studios |
| Anna, Frozen (2013) | 18 | Stated by filmmakers | The same shooting script |
| Elsa and Anna, Frozen II (2019) | About 24 and 21 | Our arithmetic | Frozen II is set three years after the first film |
| Elena, Elena of Avalor (2016) | 16 | Stated by filmmakers | Disney's 2016 announcements for the series |
Elsa, Anna and Elena are not part of the official Disney Princess lineup. Why not is explained in Is Elsa a Disney Princess? and Are Sofia and Elena Disney Princesses?
Youngest and oldest
If you count only ages stated in the films, Aurora and Ariel are the youngest at 16 and Rapunzel is the oldest at 18. Add what the filmmakers said or wrote down, and Snow White becomes the youngest at 14, Moana joins the 16-year-olds, and Belle becomes the oldest. Mark Henn, who supervised Belle's animation, said in 2016 that she is in her early 20s and "probably the oldest" of Disney's leading ladies.
Many lists name Snow White as the youngest at 14, and the number has a basis, even though it isn't in the film. It comes from a studio working outline of October 1934, written while the story was still being developed. Walt Disney was also looking for a voice that sounded like a 14-year-old girl.
Why the ages you find online don't match
Most age lists copy each other, and errors travel with them. One example: a 2013 review of Frozen on RogerEbert.com says Elsa takes the throne at 18, while the Frozen shooting script makes her 21 at her coronation. Both numbers still circulate.
Fan wikis also mix sources. They combine details from sequels, tie-in books and theme-park materials with what is in the original film, and they rarely mark which is which. A tie-in book is a legitimate source, but it is not the film.
History adds another layer. The real Pocahontas was a child when English colonists arrived in 1607; historians quoted by The New York Times in 1995 put her age at 10 to 12. The film's makers deliberately made her a young woman. If your child studies Pocahontas at school, it helps to say plainly that the film tells an invented story.
Talking about ages with your child
For a four-year-old, "sixteen" simply means "a big girl," and there is nothing to explain. Children of eight and older sometimes notice that Ariel and Aurora are teenagers whose stories end with a prince. You can explain it as a habit of old fairy tales, where a happy ending usually meant a royal wedding. Some newer films drop that ending: Moana's directors said they never felt her story needed a romance.
A good follow-up question: "What would Ariel want to do at sixteen if there were no prince in the story?" It moves the conversation from the age to the character's own wishes.
FAQ
Who is the youngest Disney Princess?
Snow White, if you count studio documents: the film doesn't give her age; a 1934 studio working document, quoted by historian Jim Korkis, describes her as 14. Among ages said on screen, the youngest are Aurora and Ariel at 16, and Moana's filmmakers also call her 16.
Who is the oldest Disney Princess?
Belle, if you go by the filmmakers. Her supervising animator, Mark Henn, said in 2016 that Belle is in her early 20s and "probably the oldest" of Disney's leading ladies. Among ages stated in the films themselves, Rapunzel is the oldest: she turns 18 during Tangled.
How old are Elsa and Anna in Frozen?
In Frozen (2013), Elsa is 21 and Anna is 18, according to Jennifer Lee's final shooting script published by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Frozen II (2019) is set three years later, which makes them about 24 and 21. Neither sister is an official Disney Princess.
How old is Moana?
Moana is 16 in the 2016 film. Co-director John Musker said so in a September 2016 interview, and Disney's publicity text for the film described her as a 16-year-old. Her voice actor, Auli'i Cravalho, was cast at 14 and turned 16 before the film opened.
Is Snow White really 14?
The film doesn't give her age; a 1934 studio working document, quoted by historian Jim Korkis, describes her as 14. It is an outline dated 22 October 1934, which Christopher Finch also quotes in The Art of Walt Disney. Walt Disney was also looking for a voice that sounded 14, and he cast Adriana Caselotti, who was 18.
Why do websites list different ages?
Most lists copy each other and rarely say where a number comes from. Only Aurora, Ariel and Rapunzel have ages given in their films. Others come from interviews, scripts or tie-in books, and several, such as Cinderella's 19 and Tiana's 19, have no primary source we could find.
